Growth vs Comfort

At work recently I was reintroduced to an interesting quote:

Growth and comfort can’t coexist

It kinda puts a name to something I’ve been feeling about myself lately. In a lot of ways, life is pretty comfortable. And in some areas I’ve been finding myself prioritizing comfort over the discomfort of growth.

This concept is certainly true in the area of learning. The brain generally learns and retains information by experiencing difficulty. Practicing a skill doesn’t make us better unless we push outside of our comfort zone. Life lessons are often more poignant and better retained when we learn them “the hard way” through some form of adversity.

I don’t think this quote is meant to imply that we should have no comfort in life. But I think too much comfort might detract from our ability to learn, to grow, to achieve.

Something to think about.
